A 22-Year Vow Renewal and a Reunion Five Years in the Making
There Are Certain Phone Calls You'll Never Forget
Not because they’re the biggest events you’ve ever booked, but because of the people on the other end of the line.
A few months ago, my phone rang, and after exchanging a few words, I heard something that immediately made me smile.
“We’re calling from Michigan…”
Before they could tell me anything else, I already knew exactly who they were.
Five years earlier, I had traveled to Corolla, North Carolina, to DJ their family reunion. It wasn’t just another event on my calendar. It became one of those weekends that reminds you why you chose this profession in the first place.
The music brought everyone together. The laughter never seemed to stop. And by the end of the night, something happened that still makes me smile.
The neighbors came over.
What started as a private family reunion turned into an after-party inside the beach house. Everyone was dancing, laughing, singing, and simply enjoying being together.
It was one of those nights where nobody wanted the music to end.
So when they called and asked if I would come back to Corolla to celebrate their 22-year vow renewal, my answer came without hesitation.
“Absolutely.”
Some bookings feel like work.
Others feel like going home.
This one felt like family.
The Road Back to Corolla
One of the things I love most about destination celebrations is that the experience begins long before the first guest arrives.
It starts with the drive.
As I made my way toward the Outer Banks, the scenery slowly began to change. The traffic disappeared. The pace slowed down. The air smelled different.
There’s something about crossing into the Outer Banks that immediately puts your mind at ease.
It’s almost like the stress stays behind on the mainland.
The closer I got to Corolla, the more excited I became—not just because I was about to DJ another incredible celebration, but because I was returning to a family that had trusted me once before.
That’s something I never take for granted.
Being invited back isn’t just a compliment.
It’s confirmation that the memories you helped create actually mattered.
Welcome to the Outer Banks
If you’ve never been to Corolla, North Carolina, it’s difficult to describe.
Yes, it’s beautiful.
Yes, the beaches are incredible.
But what makes Corolla different is its personality.
You don’t just visit Corolla.
You experience it.
The quiet roads.
The towering dunes.
The ocean breeze.
And, of course…
The famous wild horses.
Seeing those horses wandering freely along the shoreline is something that instantly reminds you that you’re somewhere special. They’re simply part of the character of this incredible place.
Before I ever unloaded a speaker or connected a cable, Corolla had already done what it always seems to do.
It slowed life down.
And for a celebration centered around 22 years of marriage, that felt exactly right.
More Than Just a Venue
When I pulled into The Chesapeake, I immediately remembered why this family had chosen it years before.
The home wasn’t simply beautiful.
It was welcoming.
Perched just steps from the beach, it wasn’t designed to impress people for a few hours.
It was designed to bring people together.
Throughout the weekend, family members gathered around the kitchen, shared meals overlooking the water, caught up on life, and enjoyed something that’s becoming harder and harder to find these days:
Uninterrupted time together.
That’s one of the biggest differences between destination celebrations and traditional events.
People aren’t rushing in and rushing out.
They’re living the experience together.
Children are playing.
Grandparents are telling stories.
Parents are laughing over coffee in the morning.
By the time the celebration officially begins, memories are already being made.
And that’s what I love most about destination events.
They’re never just about one day.
They’re about an entire weekend filled with moments that become part of a family’s story.
Behind the DJ Booth
Most people only see me when the music starts.
What they don’t see are the quiet moments beforehand.
Unloading equipment.
Testing microphones.
Walking through the timeline one last time.
Making sure every speaker, every cable, and every song is exactly where it needs to be.
As I began setting up that afternoon, I paused for a moment and looked out toward the ocean.
Five years had passed since I stood in almost the same place.
Different celebration.
Same family.
Same trust.
That’s not something I measure in dollars.
That’s something I measure in gratitude.
Because at the end of the day, I don’t believe people hire me because I own speakers or know how to mix music.
I believe they invite me into some of the biggest moments of their lives because they trust me to help create memories they’ll never forget.
And as the first guests began arriving, I knew this weekend was going to become another one of those memories.
The Moment We Had Been Waiting For
One thing I’ve learned after years of DJing weddings, reunions, vow renewals, and milestone celebrations is this:
No matter how much planning goes into an event, there is always one moment nobody can predict.
Sometimes it’s a surprise speech.
Sometimes it’s an unexpected guest.
Sometimes it’s the weather.
On this day…
It was the weather.
As family members gathered and guests found their seats, dark clouds began rolling over the Outer Banks.
Then the rain came.
Not a light drizzle.
A steady rain that had everyone looking toward the sky instead of toward the ceremony.
Like everyone else, I wondered what was going to happen.
Would we have to move everything?
Would the ceremony be delayed?
Would months of planning suddenly change because of something no one could control?
For a few minutes, all we could do was wait.
Then something incredible happened.
Almost as quickly as the rain had arrived…
It stopped.
The clouds opened.
The skies brightened.
And it was almost as if Mother Nature had decided this couple deserved their moment.
Sometimes you can’t explain timing.
You simply appreciate it.
Twenty-Two Years Later
As the music began and everyone stood together, something became very clear.
This wasn’t about recreating a wedding.
It was about celebrating everything that had happened since the wedding.
Twenty-two years.
Twenty-two years of victories.
Challenges.
Family.
Growth.
Laughter.
Memories.
Those are the things that make a vow renewal so special.
You’re not simply making promises about the future anymore.
You’re celebrating promises you’ve already kept.
Standing there watching this couple surrounded by children, relatives, and lifelong friends, I realized that everyone present wasn’t simply witnessing a ceremony.
They were celebrating a legacy.
The vows spoken years ago had grown into something much bigger than two people.
They had built a family.
They had built traditions.
They had built a life worth celebrating.
Moments like that remind me why I never take my role lightly.
Yes, I’m the DJ.
But I’m also helping provide the soundtrack to moments families will remember for the rest of their lives.
That’s an incredible responsibility—and one I never take for granted.
More Than Clients
As I watched everyone hugging, laughing, and taking family pictures after the ceremony, I found myself thinking back to our first weekend together five years earlier.
I remembered the reunion.
I remembered the music.
I remembered the neighbors walking over because they heard everyone having such a good time.
Most of all…
I remembered how welcomed I felt.
Some events are transactional.
You arrive.
You perform.
You leave.
This family has never made me feel that way.
From the moment I pulled into the driveway years ago, they treated me like I belonged there.
Coming back for this vow renewal felt exactly the same.
People often ask me what makes one event different from another.
My answer is simple.
The people.
This family loves music.
Not just one style.
Everything.
Classic R&B.
Old-school favorites.
Dance music.
Singalongs.
The kind of songs that bring grandparents, parents, and kids onto the same dance floor.
Those are my favorite crowds because music becomes more than entertainment.
It becomes a connection between generations.
Watching grandparents smile while grandchildren danced beside them reminded me that great celebrations aren’t measured by decorations or budgets.
They’re measured by the memories people create together.
Dinner, Conversations, and Quiet Moments
After the ceremony, everyone gathered for dinner overlooking the beautiful Outer Banks landscape.
The pace slowed.
Conversations replaced applause.
Stories replaced formalities.
Family members who hadn’t seen each other in years caught up over a meal together.
As a DJ, I often get a unique perspective during moments like these.
While everyone else is focused on the conversations happening around their table, I get to quietly watch the entire room.
You notice grandparents smiling at grandchildren.
Parents laughing with siblings.
Friends reconnecting after years apart.
It’s easy to think the most important part of an event happens on the dance floor.
Sometimes…
It happens around the dinner table.
Those quiet conversations can become just as meaningful as the loud celebrations that come later.
As dinner came to an end, I looked around the room and could feel the energy beginning to shift.
People were smiling a little bigger.
Conversations were getting louder.
Guests were beginning to glance toward the dance floor.
I knew exactly what that meant.
The celebration was about to begin.
When the Party Really Began
There’s a moment at almost every celebration when you can feel the energy change.
You can’t schedule it.
You can’t force it.
It simply happens.
Dinner plates are cleared away.
People finish their conversations.
Someone hears a familiar song.
A few guests make their way to the dance floor.
Then a few more.
And before you know it…
The celebration has taken on a life of its own.
That’s exactly what happened that evening.
As I looked across the room, I realized this wasn’t going to be one of those receptions where guests danced for a song or two before heading back to their seats.
This family came to celebrate.
From the very first songs, the dance floor stayed full.
Young kids danced beside their parents.
Parents danced beside grandparents.
Friends who hadn’t seen each other in years laughed like no time had passed at all.
The playlist moved effortlessly from timeless R&B classics to old-school favorites, party anthems, singalongs, and songs that had everyone pointing at one another while singing every word.
That’s one of the things I’ll always remember about this family.
They don’t just enjoy one type of music.
They love music. Period.
And when people genuinely love music, my job becomes easy.
I simply become the person helping tell their story one song at a time.
Then the Rain Returned
Just when everything seemed perfect…
The rain came back.
This time it wasn’t passing through.
It settled in.
For nearly 45 minutes, rain poured over the Outer Banks.
I watched guests glance toward the sky.
I saw people looking at each other as if to ask:
“Now what?”
There are moments like this when a DJ has a choice.
You can let the weather control the atmosphere.
Or you can help create one more unforgettable memory.
I chose the second option.
I picked up the microphone, smiled at the crowd, and said:
“Just think you’re in Brazil… LET’S GOOOOO!”
For a split second, there was silence.
Then…
The entire place exploded.
People laughed.
They cheered.
They threw their hands in the air.
And instead of running from the rain…
They danced in it.
The Moment Nobody Will Ever Forget
That’s the funny thing about celebrations.
Sometimes the moments you spend months planning aren’t the ones people remember.
Sometimes it’s the unexpected moments.
The ones no one could have scripted.
For the next 45 minutes, the rain became part of the celebration.
Shoes got wet.
Hair got soaked.
People laughed harder.
They danced bigger.
Children splashed through puddles.
Parents forgot about the weather.
Grandparents smiled as they watched another generation making memories together.
The rain didn’t ruin the party.
It gave the party a story.
Years from now, I don’t think anyone from that weekend will say:
“Remember how it rained?”
I think they’ll say:
“Remember when we danced in the rain?”
There’s a big difference.
One is a weather report.
The other is a memory.
Why I Love What I Do
As I stood behind the booth watching the dance floor, I caught myself smiling.
Not because everything had gone according to plan.
Because it hadn’t.
And somehow…
That made the celebration even better.
I’ve learned something after years of DJing weddings, reunions, anniversaries, corporate events, and celebrations throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and beyond.
People rarely remember the perfect moments.
They remember the real ones.
The unexpected ones.
The moments that make everyone laugh years later when the family gets back together.
That’s exactly what happened here.
The rain became part of their story.
And knowing I had a small role in helping turn what could have been a disappointment into one of the best memories of the entire weekend is something I’ll never forget.
As the music continued and I looked across a dance floor filled with smiling faces, I realized something.
Five years earlier, this family had trusted me to help create memories at their reunion.
Now they had trusted me again for one of the most meaningful milestones of their lives.
That’s not something I take lightly.
That’s something I’ll always be grateful for.
The Drive Home
Every event eventually comes to an end.
The last song fades out.
The lights come on.
Hugs are exchanged.
Families begin gathering their things.
And little by little, the celebration quietly becomes a memory.
As I started packing my equipment that evening, I wasn’t thinking about playlists or speakers.
I was thinking about people.
I thought about the phone call from Michigan.
I thought about the family reunion five years earlier.
I thought about the neighbors who wandered over because they heard everyone having such a good time.
I thought about watching the rain clear just in time for the ceremony.
And I smiled as I remembered everyone dancing through another downpour after I grabbed the microphone and shouted:
“Just think you’re in Brazil… LET’S GOOOOO!”
Some moments simply can’t be planned.
They happen because people choose joy over inconvenience.
They happen because families decide that a little rain isn’t going to stop them from celebrating one another.
That’s exactly what happened here.
Why This Weekend Meant So Much to Me
People often ask me what my favorite event has been.
The truth is…
I don’t have just one.
But I do have weekends that stay with me long after I get home.
This is one of them.
Not because it was the biggest event I’ve ever DJ’d.
Not because it had the most elaborate decorations.
Not even because it happened on the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks.
It stays with me because of one simple reason.
Relationships.
I’ve always believed that anyone can play music.
Technology has made that easier than ever.
But creating an atmosphere where people feel comfortable enough to laugh louder…
Dance harder…
Sing at the top of their lungs…
And completely forget about everything else for a few hours…
That’s different.
That’s what I work toward every single time I set up my equipment.
When this family called me again after five years, they weren’t hiring someone to press play.
They were inviting someone back who had already been part of one of their favorite memories.
As I packed the last speaker into my truck, I realized something.
That’s one of the greatest compliments my business could ever receive.
Every Celebration Has a Story
One of the reasons I wanted to start DJ Bon Stories is because I believe every event deserves more than a photo gallery.
Every celebration has a heartbeat.
Every family has traditions.
Every wedding, reunion, anniversary, vow renewal, and corporate event has moments that deserve to be remembered.
Sometimes those moments happen during the first dance.
Sometimes they happen during a heartfelt speech.
Sometimes…
They happen in the middle of a rainstorm.
Long after the decorations have been taken down…
Long after the tables have been cleared…
Long after everyone has returned home…
Those are the moments people talk about.
Those are the stories that get told at the next family gathering.
Those are the memories that last.
If there’s one thing this weekend reminded me, it’s that the best celebrations aren’t always the ones where everything goes exactly according to plan.
They’re the ones where everyone chooses to celebrate anyway.
Congratulations on 22 Years
To this incredible couple…
Congratulations on 22 amazing years of marriage.
Thank you for trusting me—not once, but twice—to be part of your family’s story.
Thank you for welcoming me back with the same warmth, kindness, and love that I remembered from five years ago.
Thank you for reminding me why I fell in love with this profession in the first place.
I wish you many more years of happiness, laughter, good health, and unforgettable memories together.
And who knows…
Maybe five years from now…
Our paths will cross again.
I’d be honored if they do.
The Next Story Might Be Yours
Whether you’re planning a destination wedding in the Outer Banks, a vow renewal in Corolla, a family reunion, anniversary celebration, corporate event, or another unforgettable occasion throughout Virginia, North Carolina, or beyond, I’d be honored to help create a soundtrack that feels like your story—not someone else’s.
Because after all these years, I’ve learned something simple:
“People may forget the exact songs that were played. But they’ll never forget how those songs made them feel.”
And that’s what I hope every family carries home after a celebration with DJ Bon.
See you on the dance floor.
